Berkeley County VINE Coverage
SC VINE, short for Victim Information and Notification Everyday, is South Carolina’s free statewide custody information and alert service. Its participating sources include county detention centers, the South Carolina Department of Corrections, and the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. For Berkeley County, those sources can represent custody at Hill-Finklea Detention Center, a later SCDC prison term, or community supervision administered by SCDPPPS. The agency shown on a result matters as much as the status itself.
SC VINE is reached through VINELink South Carolina, its mobile app, or the statewide telephone route. Public users may search anonymously. An account may be needed to save a person and receive certain alerts. VINE is a notification system, not the official release sheet. A county release record remains the best source for the exact time, reason, and destination attached to a Hill-Finklea booking.

Search Berkeley County VINELink
Begin with the person’s booked name or a reliable agency identifier. Name spelling, suffixes, and aliases can affect results. Age and the reporting agency help separate people with similar names. Hill-Finklea, SCDC, and SCDPPPS are not interchangeable labels. A Hill-Finklea entry concerns county detention; an SCDC entry concerns state corrections; an SCDPPPS entry concerns parole, probation, or other community supervision.

- Enter the exact first and last name, or the identifier accepted by the live form.
- Compare age and other non-sensitive details when more than one person appears.
- Open the likely record and verify the data-source agency before reading its status.
- Save the status wording, source, and access time, then confirm an important result with that agency.

The captured interface is useful for recognizing the controls, but the exact choices and account sequence can change. Follow the current labels rather than assuming an older screen still applies.
Berkeley County Release Status Fields
A VINE result should be copied in the words shown. Do not substitute “released” for “transferred,” or turn a missing record into a firm release claim. The result’s source and time define its scope. A notification can also lag the physical event because it depends on agency data reaching the service.

Important: Roster absence or “no information” is not enough. Juvenile and mental-health placements, name mismatch, data timing, and transfers can all produce silence.
Register Berkeley County Release Alerts
Registration starts from the correct person’s record. Available delivery methods may include telephone, text, or email. The current form controls which choices apply. An alert may concern release, transfer, escape or recapture, death, or a supervision change when the source participates in that event type. It reports a source-agency update. It does not explain the court outcome or promise that the person entered the community.

- Choose an offered phone, text, or email method and provide the requested contact.
- Create or sign in to an account if the current interface requires it.
- Complete confirmation prompts and retain any four-digit telephone PIN.
For telephone notices, the SC VINE FAQ says calls continue for up to 48 hours or until the four-digit PIN is entered. The PIN confirms receipt of the message. It does not alter a custody record. Keep it private. If a person moves from the county jail to SCDC, register again when directed because an alert enrollment may not follow the person across agencies.
Berkeley County VINE Phone Check
South Carolina also maintains a 24-hour telephone route at 1-866-727-2846. This is especially useful when a web search is hard to navigate or an exact SCDC person must be checked by name, SID, or SCDC number. The automated service may provide the person’s current location and a projected release date. A projection is not an actual release, and a location result must still be tied to SCDC rather than Hill-Finklea.

Formal SCDC victim notification registration uses the Division of Victim Services at 1-800-835-0304. That separate step and the need to re-register after some transfers are easy to miss.
Note: Record the agency, date, and time for any telephone result so later confirmation asks about the same reported event.
Confirm Berkeley County Release Results
Use the result to choose the next source. For a Hill-Finklea entry, call Booking at 843-719-4876 or use Berkeley County’s FOIA portal to request the booking and release record. Ask for the release date and time, disposition, and receiving agency if a transfer occurred. A person who vanishes from the current jail roster may have bonded out, completed a term, moved to SCDC, or entered another agency’s custody.
For an SCDC person, distinguish the current-only inmate search from the SCDC Released Inmate Search. The ordinary SCDC locator excludes released people. The released list searches a date range and county, supplies release date and type, and can be broadened to all locations when the Berkeley filter yields nothing. For active supervision, use SCDPPPS. Its prior-day data does not replace same-day agency confirmation.
A careful comparison uses two records when the fact is important. Pair a Hill-Finklea release sheet with the Berkeley court disposition, or pair an SCDC released-list row with an SCDPPPS supervision result. The first record shows how a booking ended; the second explains the legal outcome or what followed. If the county disposition says transfer, contact the receiving agency instead of describing the person as free. If SCDPPPS has no result, that silence may reflect the prior-day update, an identifier mismatch, or the end of supervision. It does not establish a return to custody.
Federal civilian custody is outside this VINE path. Use the BOP locator when BOP has the record and the federal court docket when a District of South Carolina order is the durable source. Military confinement at Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston is checked through Brig Master Control or the service liaison, not BOP. A person transferred to ICE also needs the ICE locator. Each database answers only for its own custody system.
Verification rule: Pair a VINE alert with the originating jail, corrections, supervision, or court record whenever exact release time, type, or destination matters.
Registry Is Not Release Proof
The SLED Sex Offender Registry serves a narrower post-custody purpose. It covers people who have a registration duty and may display aliases, photographs, a reported residence map, and qualifying convictions. It does not list all released people. Its own warnings say information can change quickly and may include data supplied by a registrant that has not yet been verified.
A registry entry can help confirm an ongoing registration obligation. It cannot prove the exact date someone left Hill-Finklea or SCDC, and the shown address should not be treated as proof of present physical location. Likewise, absence from the registry does not establish release, expungement, or the lack of a prior case. Use VINE for status alerts and the releasing agency for the actual record.
Missing Berkeley VINELink Results
A missing result calls for a source check, not a guess. First repeat the search with the booked spelling, any suffix, and a known SID or SCDC number. Then decide which agency last held or supervised the person. Hill-Finklea Booking can address a county booking. The SCDC current search and released list divide present prison custody from completed state release. The Berkeley SCDPPPS office can address current supervision, while the court docket can supply the bond, sentence, or disposition that explains a change.
Transfers deserve special attention. SC VINE advises that registration may need to be renewed when a person moves between agencies. An old Hill-Finklea registration should not be assumed to follow a new SCDC record. If the county record names ICE, another jail, or law enforcement as the receiver, follow that agency. Naval Consolidated Brig Charleston uses military channels and is not part of SCDC or BOP.
For a durable county answer, submit a focused request for the existing booking and release sheet. Include the full booked name, an approximate booking date, Hill-Finklea, and any known booking number. Ask for the release time, disposition, and destination. Those fields can resolve whether VINE silence reflects community release, transfer, or a search mismatch.
