Hill-Finklea is Berkeley County's central local-custody facility. It receives people held for the county and for documented local arresting agencies. A person may leave after bond, a court order, dismissal, time served, or completion of a local sentence. Those outcomes can mean a return to the community. The same booking can also end through transfer to SCDC, another county, law enforcement, or immigration custody.

A transfer ends Hill-Finklea custody but does not end all custody. The release disposition and receiving-agency field are vital. If the record names SCDC, switch to the statewide prison system. If it names ICE, use the immigration route promptly. If it names another county, contact that jail. Never infer the destination solely from disappearance.

Confirm a Hill-Finklea Release

Hill-Finklea Release Record Fields

Hill-Finklea Expansion Status

Berkeley County celebrated completion of an approximately 80,000-square-foot expansion in June 2026. The announcement described total capacity of 564, more than 100 new single-occupancy cells, an infirmary, lobby, and staff areas.

It said the benefits would follow once the addition became operational. Construction completion is not a verified operational start date. Current conditions should be confirmed with the facility. The project does not change the person-specific method for proving a release.

Hill-Finklea Intake and Property

The Sheriff's Office documents weekend transport for some arrests in southern Berkeley County. Sheriff, Goose Creek, Hanahan, and State Police arrests may be carried to Hill-Finklea on Friday and Saturday nights. A city police arrest may therefore appear under the county facility. That evidence does not prove every municipal detainee always goes there.

Personal or valuable property can be released with the inmate's approval Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This rule concerns property released while someone is held. It is not an official description of how belongings are returned at discharge.

Hill-Finklea Request Timing

South Carolina public-record law gives Berkeley County a response framework. For records no more than 24 months old, an initial written determination is generally due within ten business days. Older records generally receive a determination within twenty business days. When access is granted, production usually follows within thirty calendar days after the determination or deposit, or thirty-five days for older material. These are outside periods, not a promise that each release sheet will take that long.

The posted county fee schedule effective May 1, 2026 lists paper copies at $0.75 per page, CD media at $1, DVD media at $2, and variable costs for USB devices, postage, and staff work. A focused electronic request for one booking may reduce delay and cost. Review any deposit estimate before authorizing the work.

Hill-Finklea State Transfer Checks

When the county disposition identifies SCDC as the destination, use the ordinary state search because it covers current state prisoners. Its information reflects the prior midnight, so a same-day transfer may not appear at once. Once the person later leaves SCDC, switch to the separate Released Inmate Search. It searches by release-date interval and county, not name.

A Berkeley selection is an SCDC association, not proof of Hill-Finklea community release. Keep the events distinct. The county record confirms local transfer. SCDC confirms state custody or later state release. SC VINE may add an alert, but transfers can require re-registration and data may lag.
